SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University forced visiting Shippensburg University into six turnovers Saturday afternoon en route to a 16-14 win over the 19th-ranked (AFCA) Red Raiders in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division football action.

Shippensburg outgained The Rock by a 371-109 margin in total offense behind a 270-yard passing effort by Rick Henshaw, who completed 20 of 41 pass attempts. But SRU picked off four Henshaw passes, the final one coming at the hosts' 3-yard line with 2:23 left in the game.

Corey Lemmon recorded two of the interceptions, while Kevin Johnston had the final pickoff.

Shippensburg had a chance to win the game with nine seconds left to play, but a 34-yard field goal attempt by Jarod Guoy sailed wide to the right.

John Kuhn rushed for 86 yards to lead Shippensburg's 103-yard ground effort. Andre McLaurin was the Red Raiders' top receiver with six receptions for 66 yards.

Rock backup quarterback Chad DeVore was 9-of-26 passing for 94 yards and threw one interception. Mike Vernillo was SRU's leading rusher with 21 yards on 10 carries.

John Katsaouni, who set an SRU school record with four field goals in the previous week's overtime loss at California U. of Pa., booted three field goals and had one extra point on Saturday. His first boot of 52 yards tied the school record for longest.

The Rock's Asaad Allen returned a blocked punt 18 yards for a touchdown on Shippensburg's first possession to open the game's scoring.

Tim Devanney caught a 52-yard pass from Henshaw for Shippensburg's first TD, which narrowed The Rock lead to 16-7.

Henshaw and Patrick Ferguson hooked up for a six-yard TD with 5:10 left in the third quarter to account for the Red Raiders' second TD, which narrowed the hosts' lead to 16-14.

The Rock travels to Millersville for a PSAC interdivisional game next Saturday, Oct. 18, before visiting PSAC-West rival Edinboro on Oct. 25. The next Rock home game is Nov. 1 vs. Lock Haven. Game time is 1 p.m.
