Kevin Reynolds was named the 18th head men’s basketball coach in Slippery Rock University history on May 15, 2008. Over the last 10 seasons, he has turned a program that had won just 99 games from 1994-2008 into one of the top teams in the Atlantic Region on an annual basis.
Reynolds, who enters his 11th year at The Rock in 2018-19, has compiled an impressive overall record of 188-109 (.633) in the previous 10 seasons. Despite being at The Rock for a relatively short amount of time, Reynolds is already the second winningest coach in program history. He is just 33 victories away from passing N. Kerr Thompson for the most wins by an SRU men’s basketball coach in program history. Thompson coached at SRU for 20 years, amassing a 221-109 record.
Under Reynolds, Slippery Rock has produced six seasons with at least 20 wins, qualified for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament on eight occasions and has earned three NCAA Tournament berths. In the 97 years prior to Reynolds’ arrival, SRU had recorded just three 20-win seasons and three NCAA Tournament bids.
Reynolds, who was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year in 2008-09, has averaged 18.8 wins per year at Slippery Rock, which is the second highest average of any current coach in the PSAC.
During his tenure at The Rock, Reynolds has guided two teams to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. SRU matched a school record with 23 wins in 2012-13 on the way to the round of 32 while the 2014-15 Rock squad advanced to the second round of the national tournament and finished the season with a 21-11 record.
Off the court, 43 players have earned bachelor's degrees and eight more have earned graduate degrees while playing for Reynolds at The Rock.
During the Reynolds era Slippery Rock has dominated at home with a stellar 112-30 (.789) record at Morrow Field House.
A staple to virtually every Reynolds team at Slippery Rock has been great rebounding combined with smothering defense. Dating back to the 2010-11 season, Slippery Rock has ranked in the top eight in the nation in rebounding margin eight times and in the top 20 in the country in points allowed per game five times.
Under Reynolds, 17 players have earned All-PSAC West honors including 2008-09 Player of the Year Denell Stephens and 2012-13 Defensive Player of the Year Luiz Santos. Six players have gone on to earn all-region honors in Stephens, Antonio Butler, Devin Taylor (twice), Maron Brown, Kyle Camper and Micah Till with Stephens, Brown, Taylor and Till all being recognized as All-Americans as well.
Upon leaving The Rock, 16 Reynolds-coached players have gone on to play professionally, a virtually unheard of number for an NCAA Division II program.
Prior to coming to Slippery Rock, Reynolds spent nearly a decade as an assistant coach on the NCAA Division I level. He was an assistant for one season at Morehead State, three years at the University of Denver, one summer at Penn State and six seasons at Drake. He served as the interim head coach for the final half of the 2006-07 season at Denver.
Prior to entering the world of Division I coaching, Reynolds got his start in the profession at a pair of PSAC schools. He first served as a graduate assistant at Indiana (Pa.) for two seasons before spending two more years at IUP as an assistant coach for the Crimson Hawks. During that time, Indiana made two Elite Eight appearances and one trip the Final Four.
Following his time at IUP, Reynolds moved on to Edinboro University, where he helped the Fighting Scots reach the round of 32, before returning to Indiana (Pa.) as the associate head coach for one season prior to entering the Division I coaching circle.
Outside of the coaching world, Reynolds served as the the director of international sports marketing for the shoe manufacturer AND1 for one year.
As a player, Reynolds competed for four seasons at Bloomsburg University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing in 1991. As a graduate assistant at IUP, Reynolds earned both his MBA and a master’s degree in Industrial and labor relations.
