COACHING MATCHUP
Slippery Rock head coach Shawn Lutz is in his 30th overall year at The Rock and his 10th year (ninth season) as head coach, where he owns an 84-21 record with nine straight winning seasons, five PSAC West titles and six trips to the NCAA playoffs. Lutz was the PSAC West Coach of the Year in 2018, 2019 and 2023 and was the Don Hansen Football Gazette Division II National Coach of the Year in 2019. The 84 wins are the most among all PSAC head coaches since the 2016 season. Lutz was an assistant at SRU for 20 years before taking over the program in 2016. He has been a member of the coaching staff for 13 of SRU's 20 PSAC West titles. Lutz played tight end at WVU, graduating in 1996, and earned a master's degree in sport management from Slippery Rock in 2003.

Mark Maciejewski is in his 25th overall year on the coaching staff and his 15th year (14th season) as the head coach at his Alma Mater, where he earned both his undergrad degree in 1992 and his master's degree in 1996. Maciekewski ranks second among all active PSAC coaches with 85 wins, one more than Lutz. His 85 wins also rank 13th in PSAC history. He owns a career record of 85-63 for a .574 winning percentage. He guided Shippensburg to the NCAA Playoffs in 2012 and again in 2017 and has put together nine winning seasons with the Raiders.

NATIONAL RANKINGS
Slippery Rock stayed put at No. 4 in this week's AFCA Division II national rankings. The Rock also held steady at No. 9 in the D2football.com media poll. Both national polls are available on page nine of the PDF notes linked above.

SHIPPENSBURG QUICK HITS

• The defense allows 27.0 points per game with opponents putting up 316.0 total yards per game with 125.5 rushing yards and 190.5 passing yards.
• Ship's defense ranks in the top 10 nationally in sacks with nine total sacks in two games.

• WR Jaevon Parker leads the team with 12 catches for 103 yards and one TD. Derek Guzman has 89 yards and Ty Neal has 86 yards and one score. Seven different players have at least 27 receiving yards on the year.

WELCOME BACK B. LONG
Slippery Rock will welcome back its starting QB from the last two seasons and one of the best student-athletes in program history when Brayden Long returns to the sideline this week… wearing red and blue. Long was hired as a full-time offensive assistant and recruiting coordinator at Shippensburg this summer and is in his first full season as a collegiate coach. Long will be recognized in a brief private ceremony earlier in the day Saturday as SRU presents him with a few major awards he received in recent months, including the 2024-25 PSAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the 2024-25 Division II Overall Academic All-American of the Year award, which recognized him as the top student-athlete in the country in 2024-25. He is the only SRU student-athlete to ever win the overall Academic All-American of the Year honor and is the only football player in PSAC history to earn the award.

19 STRAIGHT WINS IN HOME OPENERS
Last week's overtime win marked the 19th straight win in a home opener for The Rock. Slippery Rock hasn't lost its home opener since 2005.

FOUR NIGHT GAMES TO OPEN SEASON
This week will mark the third of four straight 6 p.m. kickoffs in the month of September, including a road game to open the year and three straight home games in weeks 2-4.

WE LOVE NIGHT GAMES
The Rock have won their last 36 consecutive games that started at 4 p.m. or later and have not lost a night game at home or on the road since Sept. 29, 2012. SRU has won its last eight road night games and has not lost a night game on the road since Sept. 19, 2009. The Rock are 36-1 at home in night games since 2010 and have won 28 straight home night games since 2012. SRU is 47-9 all-time in home night games since lights were installed at Mihalik-Thompson stadium in 2003.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
Rock football teams have compiled a 196-70 (.737) record in 51 seasons at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium (formerly known as N. Kerr Thompson Stadium). The Rock own a 96-25 (.793) home record since artificial turf was installed in the summer of 2003 and are 92-19 (.829) in home games since 2005. The numbers get even better in recent years, as The Rock are 74-10 (.881) at home since the beginning of the 2010 season and 62-7 (.899) since the beginning of the 2013 season.

10-0 IN SALUTE TO MILITARY & FIRST RESPONDERS GAMES
Slippery Rock is 10-0 in the annual Salute to Military and First Responders game, never losing at home on its night to honor the men and women that serve our country and communities. The game began during the 2014 season and has been played each year since.

EARLY SEASON PSAC CROSSOVER GAMES
Slippery Rock has won its last 12 early season crossover games against PSAC East opponents, a streak that dates back to week two of the 2018 season when SRU lost 25-21 at Shippensburg. That loss at Shippensburg in 2018 is the only time SRU has lost an early season PSAC crossover to an East Division team since 2012. The Rock are 23-1 since the beginning of 2013 against the PSAC East in the early season crossover games.

STAPLES IN THE NATIONAL POLL
Slippery Rock has appeared in every weekly national poll released by the American Football Coaches Association since the final rankings of the 2018 season, a streak that stretches more than six full years. The Rock opened the 2025 season ranked No. 4 in the national poll and have remained there in each of the first three weekly polls.

LAST WEEK FOR THE ROCK
Slippery Rock overcame a 28-14 deficit with 14 points in the final 3:08 of regulation and came away with a 35-28 win in overtime after outscoring Shepherd 21-0 to close the game. JayJay Jordan scored three touchdowns with two on the ground and one in the passing game and QB DaOne Owens rushed for a game-tying touchdown to set up overtime after coming into the game in relief in the fourth quarter. The Rock defense held Shepherd to 0-for-3 on fourth down, including coming up with the huge stop with under two minutes to play that set up the tying drive.

LAST WEEK FOR SHIPPENSBURG
Shippensburg's comeback attempt fell just short in a 31-24 loss on the road at Clarion. The Raiders trailed 31-10 in the second half before rallying back with 14 unanswered points to close the game. Ship threw for 245 yards and ran for 45 yards while allowing 241 passing yards and 106 rushing yards. Riley Gunnels was 24-of-41 for 245 yards with two TD and no INT. Ty Neal caught five passes for 63 yards and one TD. Nate Myers led the defense with 10 tackles, 2.5 TFL and 1.5 sacks. The Raiders defense tallied five total sacks in the game.

GREGORY EARNS PSAC WEEKLY HONOR
LB Teddy Gregory Jr. was named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week for his performance in The Rock's win last week. He picked up his first career weekly award after tallying a career-high 15 total tackles, including the game-changing fourth down stop late in the fourth quarter that gave SRU the ball back and set up the tying drive to force overtime.

JORDAN DOES IT AGAIN
RB JayJay Jordan accounted for a game-high 129 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns last week to lead The Rock offense. He rushed for 70 yards and two TD on 13 carries for 5.4 yards per carry and caught four passes for 35 yards and one TD. He leads the PSAC and ranks ninth nationally in scoring, averaging 12.0 points per game with four touchdowns on the year. Jordan also ranks 12th nationally in yards per carry (7.47) and 14th in rushing yards per game (112.0). His 158.0 all-purpose yards per game rank 18th in the country.

FIRST HOME OVERTIME GAME SINCE 2017
Last week's overtime game marked the first time The Rock has played an overtime game at home since a Sept. 30, 2017 win over California (Pa.) when Jake Chapla booted a game-winning field goal to knock off the No. 5 Vulcans 47-44. It was just the second total overtime game SRU has played since that night in 2017 with the most recent being the second round of the NCAA Playoffs last year at Kutztown, when SRU won 25-24 with a two-point conversion. The Rock have won their last four overtime games and have not lost in overtime since Oct. 4, 2008 against Indiana (Pa.).

OWENS LEADS IMPROBABLE COMEBACK
Trailing 28-14 with just under 12 minutes to play last week, head coach Shawn Lutz inserted redshirt freshman QB DaOne Owens to try to spark the offense. His first series saw the offense go three-and-out and have to punt. After that, Owens got the ball back with 5:24 to play and led SRU on a pair of touchdown drives in the final five minutes, including scoring on his own QB keeper with 36 seconds left to force OT, where SRU came away with a win. Owens ran for 46 yards and one TD on four carries and went 5-of-8 for 56 yards passing.

FRESHMAN QBS AT THE ROCK
When DaOne Owens stepped into the game last week to play meaningful minutes, he became the first freshman or redshirt freshman QB at Slippery Rock to play meaningful snaps in a game since Augustus Necastro was forced into action late in the 2016 season. Necastro, who was a true freshman and the third string QB on the depth chart, played the second half of one game and then made one start late in the 2016 season after starting QB Don King and backup Nathaniel Musselman were both injured. Necastro played well under the circumstances, but SRU lost both of those games. Owens is the first freshman QB to lead The Rock to a win since Ryan O'Rourke led SRU to a victory over Lock Haven Oct. 31, 2009.

FRESHMAN QBS TO START A GAME
With Owens possibly on track to start at some point this year, he could become just the fourth freshman or redshirt freshman to start a game at SRU since 2009. The last freshman to start was Augustus Necastro against Clarion in 2016 (loss). Zack Newsock started against Winston-Salem State in 2013 (loss). Ryan O'Rourke started two games in 2009, winning his first game against Lock Haven and losing his second against East Stroudsburg.

FRESHMEN MAKE IMPACT IN SHEPHERD WIN
In addition to the obvious contributions from Owens, Slippery Rock also saw a couple other freshmen make significant impacts in the win last week. Offensive tackle Varrius Farrell played a chunk of minutes and was in the game blocking on the comeback touchdown drives. Linebacker Troy Lucas made his debut and played most of the second half, tallying two tackles. Redshirt freshman tight end Lou Swartz also played significant minutes after backup Vincent Berardi left the game after the opening kickoff.

SUTTON FINDS END ZONE AGAIN
WR Latrell Sutton has scored a touchdown in each of the first two weeks, catching a TD from Anthony Vespo in the opener at Franklin Pierce before pulling down a 38-yard TD on a wide receiver pass from Xander McClure against Shepherd. Through two weeks as the No. 1 receiver, Sutton leads SRU with 109 receiving yards and two touchdowns. He is averaging 18.2 yards per catch and 54.5 yards per game.

RECEIVER PLAYING DEFENSE CALLS GAME
The final play of the game last week was an incomplete pass from Shepherd, which never had a chance because Evan Harper blitzed off the edge and hit the quarterback as he attempted to throw. Harper is a wide receiver who transferred in from Tiffin this year. With some injury issues in the secondary, Harper was moved to the defensive side of the ball temporarily. He played a lot of minutes last week and made the play to seal the win, finishing with one tackle, one pass breakup and one QB hurry.

REPLAY PAYS OFF IN HOME OPENER
The PSAC is mandating officials review for all football games in 2025. Slippery Rock debuted its review system for the first time last week and it proved to be a game-changer, literally. SRU challenged the spot of the ball with just under two minutes to play when Shepherd was credited with a first down on a fourth-and-one. Video evidence showed the ball carrier was down a half-yard short and the call was reversed, giving the ball to SRU to set up the game-tying drive to force overtime. SRU is now 1-for-2 in video review challenges this year, losing one in the opener and winning one in week two.

TURNOVER PROBLEMS
Slippery Rock turned the ball over four times last week against Shepherd while coming up with no takeaways, losing the turnover battle 4-0. Entering this week, The Rock rank 143rd out of 157 Division II programs in turnover margin, averaging -2.00 turnovers per game. SRU has thrown four interceptions and lost two fumbles for six total turnovers in the first two games.

OFFENSIVE LINE SHUFFLING
Slippery Rock continues shuffle offensive linemen while dealing with numerous injuries early in the season. The Rock lost two players for the year before the season even began, including starting right tackle Jake Jonassen and reserve lineman Matt Muir, who were both injured during preseason. The Rock then lost starting center Matthew Prudhomme in the opener. Prudhomme will be back, but missed last week's game. All-American left tackle Joe Cooper and right guard Luke Pugliese are the only veteran starters on the line. Left guard Eli Podgorski has started each of the last two games. The center and right tackle positions have seen shuffling. Mohamed Aly and Dom Clifford have both played at center after the injury to Prudhomme, while Luke Caldwell and Varrius Farrell have seen time at the right tackle spot. Despite the injuries and the shuffling, the offensive line has allowed just two total sacks through the first two weeks.

YOUNG GETS FIRST SACKS – NATIONAL RANKS
After battling injuries for two seasons, DE Brian Young Jr. is finally healthy and making an impact on the defensive line. He had the best game of his young career last week with six tackles and a game-high 2.5 sacks. His 2.5 sacks vaulted him up to No. 2 in the PSAC and No. 8 in Division II this fall in sacks per game (1.25).

DEFENSIVE TACKLES PLAYING WELL
The Rock's defensive tackles, Trever Valenti and Nick Frisco, both tallied career-highs for tackles last week. Valenti has career-highs in tackles in both games this year with eight stops in each game and ranks third overall on the team in tackles with 16. He also has 1.5 TFL and 1.0 sack. Frisco set a career-high last week with seven total tackles, including a half TFL. He is fifth overall on the team with nine tackles.

FASTEST MAN IN THE PSAC AT CORNER
CB Kanye Thompson tallied a career-high 10 tackles last week against Shepherd and enters this week ranked No. 2 on the SRU roster with 17 total tackles, including one sack and one forced fumble. Thompson is one of the fastest Division II football players in the country. The PSAC 100-meter champion, he broke the PSAC and SRU 100-meter dash records last spring on the track and earned All-America honors with a 10th place finish at the National Championships, where he clocked a time of 10.1 seconds for 100 meters.

WINS WHEN RUSHING FOR 100+
Slippery Rock won every game in 2024 when it rushed for more than 100 yards as a team and continued that trend in the first two weeks of 2025. The Rock have now won 12 straight games when they reach at least 100 rushing yards as a team.

ROBERTS HAS BEEN SOLID IN KICKING GAME
PK Kevin Roberts entered week one as the backup kicker, but moved into the starting role with an injury to freshman Billy Lech leading up to the opener. Roberts has performed well, going 8-for-8 on PAT kicks and 1-for-2 on field goal attempts. He is also serving as the punter, where he is averaging 34.8 yards per punt. Roberts has made 72 career PAT kicks, which ranks 11th all-time at SRU.

STILL LOOKING FOR BREAKOUT OFFENSIVE GAME
Slippery Rock has now gone 17 straight games without scoring 40 points, a streak that stretches back to the NCAA quarterfinals in 2023. The highest scoring games last fall were three separate 38-point efforts. The last time SRU reached 40 points in a game was a 45-35 win at No. 1 seed Tiffin in the second round of the NCAA Playoffs, Nov. 25, 2023. SRU scored more than 40 points in 10 different games in 2023.

RED ZONE OFFENSE IMPROVES
Slippery Rock went just 2-of-4 in the red zone in the season opener at Franklin Pierce, failing to score on two separate trips inside the five-yard line. The Rock were much better in the red zone last week, going 4-for-4 with four touchdowns in the red zone against Shepherd.

KICKOFF RETURN GAME STRUGGLES
The Rock are still looking for a spark in the return game and enter this week ranked 150th in the nation in kickoff returns, averaging just 12.7 yards per return.

STARTERS NOTES
Entering this season, Slippery Rock returned only 15 players that had ever started a game at The Rock, including just five players with at least 10 career starts and six total players that started the 2024 national semifinal game at Ferris State. Joe Cooper leads all players on the team with 30 starts, while Daniel Tooson leads the defense with 21 starts. Tooson was injured in 2024 and has yet to make his debut in 2025, but is expected back this fall. Cooper has the longest active streak on the team at 30 straight starts, followed by Luke Pugliese and Michael Henwood with 16 straight starts.

12 PLAYERS MAKE FIRST STARTS AT SRU
Slippery Rock had a total of 10 players make their first SRU start in the opener against Franklin Pierce, including seven on offense and three on defense. The players to make their first SRU start in the opener were QB Anthony Vespo, RB JayJay Jordan, WR John Sabo, WR Latrell Sutton, OL Eli Podgorski, OL Matthew Prudhomme and OL Luke Caldwell on the offense and DT Nick Frisco, DB Joshua Hayes and DB Michael Dahn on the defense. Game two saw DL Brett Kwoka and OL Mohamed Aly make their first starts at SRU.

CAPTAINS
Slippery Rock has named four captains for the 2025 season with the team voting for two offensive players and two defensive players to serve as captains. The offensive captains are quarterback Anthony Vespo and offensive tackle Joe Cooper, while the defensive captains will be safety Michael Henwood and linebacker Jacob Snow.

COOPER NAMED TO EAST-WEST SHRINE BOWL WATCHLIST
SRU left tackle Joe Cooper picked up a high honor entering this fall when he was named as one of just 10 players in Division II on the East-West Shrine Bowl Watchlist. Cooper, at 6-foot-7 and 320 pounds, has already received visits from multiple NFL teams.

COOPER AND KWOKA ON D2 ELITE 100 LIST
Slippery Rock landed two players on the D2football.com Elite 100 list entering this season with left tackle Joe Cooper and defensive lineman Brett Kwoka both being recognized.

PICKED ATOP THE PSAC WEST AGAIN
Slippery Rock was picked first in the PSAC West preseason coaches poll announced earlier this summer. Rivals Indiana (Pa.) and California (Pa.) were picked second and third. The Rock will host both of their biggest rivals at home this year with Cal visiting Sept. 27 and IUP heading to SRU for Homecoming Oct. 18.

PSAC WEST DOMINANCE
Slippery Rock has lost just three PSAC Western Division games since Oct. 21, 2017 and is 40-3 against the Division since then, including 38-3 in the last six full seasons with five PSAC West titles over that stretch. The Rock have won or at least shared nine of the 13 PSAC West titles dating back to 2011, easily leading all programs in the Division. SRU head coach Shawn Lutz is 43-5 against the PSAC West in the last seven seasons and 46-9 against the Division in his career as head coach.

WINNING SEASONS STREAK
Slippery Rock has put together a winning season in each of the last 15 years, which ranks ninth among all Division II programs for the longest active winning seasons streak in the country. The only other program in the PSAC with more consecutive winning seasons currently is California (Pa.), which has strung together 20 winning seasons entering 2025.

PLAYOFF STAPLES
Slippery Rock has reached the NCAA Division II Playoffs in each of the last six seasons and has made a playoff appearance in nine of the last 11 seasons. The Rock reached the NCAA quarterfinals in 2018, made the national semifinals in 2019, reached the first round in 2021, made the second round in 2022, reached the quarterfinals in 2023 and made the semifinals again in 2024. Slippery Rock's current streak of six straight trips to the playoffs is the second-longest active streak among all Division II programs, trailing only Ferris State (10) for the longest active playoff streak.

UP NEXT
Slippery Rock will open PSAC West play at home next Saturday night, Sept. 27, with a 6 p.m. televised game against No. 8 California (Pa.) in a rematch of the 2024 Super Region One title game. WKBN-TV out of Youngstown, Ohio will produce the broadcast.
