QUAKERTOWN, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University softball team's 2016 season came to an end Wednesday with a pair of losses at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference tournament at Veterans Field in Quakertown, Pa.
Prior to the games, senior outfielder
Stacey Herzog was named the PSAC Champion Scholar for having the highest grade point average among all athletes in the PSAC tournament.
Slippery Rock lost its first game of the tournament to Millersville, 4-2, in the afternoon before losing an elimination game to Indiana (Pa.), 2-1, Wednesday night.
SRU finishes its season with a 20-23 record. The tournament berth was the first for The Rock since 2009.
Emily Nagle led The Rock with a 5-for-8 performance from the plate across the two games.
Ashley Samluk also registered multiple hits in the losses.
Game One: Millersville 4, Slippery Rock 2
Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the first inning, Slippery Rock plated two runs to cut Millersville's lead to two. The Rock left at least one runner on base in each of the final six innings and out-hit the Marauders 8-4, but it wasn't enough to catch them as Millersville went on to win its first ever PSAC tournament game.
Millersville started the game in a big way as Kelsey Campbell crushed a three-run homer to center field and Jaynie Black had an RBI single down the right field line to give the Marauders a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
SRU brought the bats in the bottom of the first as
Emily Nagle starting things off with her third triple of the season to deep right field.
Caitlin Baxter had an RBI double to left center that scored Nagle and
Stacey Herzog had a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Samluk from third, who reached base on a single, to make the score 4-2. Those would be the only runs that either team would score for the remainder of the game.
Nagle, Samluk and
Megan Maloney led The Rock with two hits apiece.
Brooke Dawson (9-9) was tagged with the loss after 5.1 innings of work. She struck out nine and surrendered four hits and four runs.
Carly DeRose struck out one in 1.2 hitless innings of relief.
Game Two: Indiana 2, Slippery Rock 1
In game two, IUP got out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run to left center by Amanda Parrish.
In the fifth inning, Samluk tied it up 1-1 with an RBI double to right center to send home Nagle, who doubled to left center to start the inning. The Rock placed runners on all bases, but IUP pitcher Lauren Zola worked her way out of the jam by forcing a pop out and striking out two batters to halt The Rock's rally attempt.
In the sixth inning, IUP loaded the bases and Mackenna Miller hit an infield RBI single to give IUP the winning run.
DeRose (8-9) took the loss in game two after pitching three innings, striking out two, and allowing two hits. Starter
Paige Flore pitched four innings and gave up three hits.
Slippery Rock will say goodbye to seniors Herzog, Samluk, Maloney and
Katie Kaiser.
