ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team's season came to an end Saturday afternoon with a 66-48 loss at Gannon University in the first round of the 2014-15 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament.
Â
Slippery Rock closes its season at 11-16 overall. The 11 wins represent the most victories for the program in a single-season since the 2005-06 season.
Â
The Rock played with Gannon (22-6) in the first half, trailing by only four points at the break, but couldn't overcome a second half in which Gannon made six three-pointers in the loss.
Â
SRU, which was playing in its first postseason game in nine seasons, was led by senior forward
D'Asia Chambers who scored 17 points grabbed four rebounds and blocked two shots in her final collegiate game. Chambers leaves Slippery Rock ranked fifth in school history in rebounds and ninth in points.
Â
Junior guards
Taylor Siggers and
Breanna Gross added nine and eight points, respectively. The pair also combined for nine rebounds.
Â
Gannon started out the contest on a 10-1 run and held The Rock's offense without a field goal for the opening 7:19. However, following the Golden Knights' early spurt Slippery Rock's aggressive zone defense began to take its toll as SRU limited GU to just 13 points while forcing nine turnovers through the final 15 minutes of the first half.
Â
With Slippery Rock excelling on the defensive end, The Rock finally began to break through offensively. Chambers came on to score 10 points while the rest of the lineup hit timely shots, including a three-pointer from the corner by Siggers with 28 seconds left in the period that capped off a 10-3 Rock run and sent SRU into halftime trailing by just four points at 23-19.
Â
Siggers began the second half by spinning into the paint and finishing with a layup that cut Gannon's lead to 23-21, but the two-point deficit would be as close as The Rock would get. Gannon rattled off 11 consecutive points thanks in part to a pair of three-pointers to push its lead back to 34-21 through the first five minutes of the final half.
Â
After trailing by as many as 15 points, Slippery Rock began to chip away at the Golden Knights' lead, even cutting the margin to 10 points on two separate occasions, but every time SRU seemed poised to make a serious run Gannon managed to suppress the attack with three-pointers on the ensuing possessions to end any thoughts of a Rock comeback victory.
Â
For the game, Slippery Rock shot 30.4 percent from the field while holding Gannon to a 30.6 shooting percentage.
Â
