BELMONT, N.C. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team dropped a 17-14 decision at Belmont Abbey College Saturday morning in Belmont, N.C. to close its annual spring break trip.

The Rock dropped to 1-1 overall after winning the season opener earlier in the week over Catawba in Myrtle Beach. Belmont Abbey improved its season record to 5-5 overall.

The Rock struggled on the wet grass field early in the game and turned the ball over 17 times in the first half, which the Crusaders were able to capitalize on and turn into a 9-6 halftime advantage. The hosts would scored the first three goals of the second half to make it a six-goal game and Slippery Rock ran out of time for the comeback.

Belmont Abbey finished the game with advantages of 32-31 in shots, 31-20 in ground balls and 15-8 in caused turnovers. Slippery Rock was dominant on the draw to post a 23-10 advantage in draw controls. The Rock finished 11-of-19 on the clear, while the Crusaders were 17-of-26.

Holly Webb led Slippery Rock with four goals and one assist, while Morgan Pettit and Katie Cook each netted a hat trick with three goals. Jess Verbic and Kaytlin Callaghan each scored one goal and handed out three assists.

Lauren Laubach added one goal and led the team with a game-high 12 draw controls and two caused turnovers. Paige Costantino capped the goal scorers with one goal for SRU.

Hannah Houde played the entire 60 minutes in the cage for The Rock and suffered her first loss after allowing 17 goals and recording nine saves, all in the first half.

Belmont Abbey was led by a seven-goal effort from Makenzie Miller, while Megan Patton added two goals and three assists.

Danielle Ruffalo improved to 5-5 on the season after making nine saves, all in the second half.

The Rock's comeback effort ran out of time after they began to swing momentum in their favor over the final three minutes, scoring three goals in the final 1:38.

Slippery Rock will open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play Tuesday with a 4 p.m. game at Mercyhurst. The Rock opens the home schedule Thursday night at 7 p.m. against Shepherd and will host Lock Haven Saturday at 1 p.m.
