MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team opened the 2013 season with a convincing 24-5 win over Catawba College Wednesday at Ashley Booth Field in Myrtle Beach.
Slippery Rock got goals from 12 different players and finished with 18 assists on 24 goals to open the year at 1-0. The Rock will complete their spring break trip with an 11 a.m. game at Belmont Abbey Saturday morning. Catawba dropped to 2-7 with the loss.
More important than the game itself was the touching tribute that took place before the game in honor of the Seton Hill women's lacrosse team and the tragedy that struck their program. Both teams joined hands at the center circle, where they were even joined by the Clarion University softball team. The teams stood in silence as two bagpipers played Amazing Grace. Following the tribute, all three teams shouted Seton Hill in a group huddle before the game began.
Slippery Rock also wore ribbons on their uniforms and painted their faces with Seton Hill's colors to show their respect.
“We have a lot of players on this team that are very close with the Seton Hill team,” said head coach
Emily Hopkins. “This tragedy hurts everyone in the women's lacrosse community and we felt like we needed to do something in their honor to let them know we are all in this together.”
After the emotional pregame ceremony, Slippery Rock opened the game with four quick goals and never looked back. The Rock ran out to a 16-2 halftime lead and had the game into the mercy rule running clock (10 goal lead) with 10 minutes left before halftime.
Lauren Laubach led the way for SRU with five goals and two assists to go along with seven draw controls and four ground balls.
Morgan Pettit and
Katie Cook each scored a hat trick and Pettit led the team with three caused turnovers.
Paige Costantino came in off the bench and scored one goal to go along with a game-high five assists.
Kaytlin Callaghan was impressive in her collegiate debut, scoring a hat trick and handing out two assists to go along with three draw controls.
Brittany Jaillet tallied two goals and three assists and
Holly Webb scored two goals and handed out one assist.
Anna-Marie Warrington and
Jess Verbic each scored one goal and dished out two assists and
Jessica Johnson capped the multiple point scorers with a goal and an assist.
Erin Wilcox and
Lacey Allis each scored one goal, the first of their respective careers, to cap the scorers.
Hannah Houde picked up the win in goal after playing the first 30 minutes and allowing two goals while recording three saves.
Natalie Crenshaw played 15:23 of the second half and allowed no goals while making two saves and
Jordan Wagner played the final 14:37, allowing three goals and recording one save.
Catawba was led by two goals from Alyssa Corace. Bethany Davis took the loss in net, allowing 24 goals and recording 12 saves.
