CALIFORNIA, Pa.Dana O'Neill made two saves in a penalty kick shootout to lead the Slippery Rock University women's soccer team into the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament after The Rock and No. 24 Edinboro played to a 1-1 double overtime tie in the opening round Friday at the Philipsburg Soccer Complex.

Slippery Rock (13-5-3) was dominant in the game and finished with advantages in every category, but struggled to score in regulation. The Rock left no doubt in the shootout, converting all four attempts to put the pressure on Edinboro (13-4-3).

Shelby Ward, Emer Flatley, Allison Harbart and Lauren Impey all converted their penalty kick attempts with ease and Dana O'Neill sealed the win by making two brilliant diving saves. She stopped the second shooter with a leap to her left and dove to the right to stone Lauralee Clements on the fourth attempt to give SRU a 4-2 edge in the shootout.

Slippery Rock advances to the second round of the tournament for the third straight year and will face No. 16 California (Pa.) in the second round Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Philipsburg Soccer Complex. Sunday's game will be a rematch of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship game that Slippery Rock won, 3-0, last Sunday at the same facility.

Slippery Rock finished Friday's opening round game with advantages of 23-13 in total shots, 7-4 in shots on goal and 7-4 in corner kicks. The Rock was dominant in the second period, outshooting the Fighting Scots 10-4 and hitting two crossbars, but narrowly missed chances to end it in regulation.

O'Neill finished the game with three saves before her heroics in the shootout. Her counterpart, Meghan Kelly, made six saves in regulation and did not get a hand on any of the shootout attempts.

Erin Storck opened the game's scoring for Slippery Rock when she finished a perfect crossing pass from Lucy Hannon in the 31st minute to put The Rock up 1-0.

Just over a minute later, Karisa Fernandez evened the game at 1-1 when she took a pass from Kelsey Knoll in the middle of the box and fired a hard shot into the upper right corner of the net.

The teams took a 1-1 tie into the halftime break with Slippery Rock owning advantages of 10-7 in shots and 4-2 in corner kicks.

Both teams had chances in the second half and overtime periods, but neither could convert. Stephanie Buckenheimer hit the crossbar twice for Slippery Rock and missed by just inches with only 11 seconds left in the second overtime. Edinboro's Liz Debo had a wide open look at an empty net in the first overtime period, but missed just left.

Ward took the first penalty kick for Slippery Rock and easily scored. Debo took the first shot for Edinboro and scored off the post to make it 1-1 after the first round.

Flatley took the second shot for SRU and scored with ease. Stephanie Tighe took the second shot for the Scots and O'Neill made a diving save to her left to make it 2-1 Slippery Rock after two rounds.

Harbart banked her shot off the post in the third round for SRU and Becca Costello converted for Edinboro to make it 3-2 Slippery Rock going to the fourth round.

Impey scored with a hard shot as the fourth shooter for SRU and O'Neill made the diving save to her right on Clements' shot to end the shootout.

Slippery Rock will meet the region's top seed California for the third time this season when the teams play in the second round Sunday. The Vulcans earned a slim double overtime win during the regular season, while Slippery Rock was dominant in a 3-0 win in the PSAC title game.

The winner of Sunday's game will advance to the Round of 16, which will be played at the highest remaining seed in the Atlantic Region. The other two teams still alive in the region are West Chester (No. 2 seed) and West Virginia Wesleyan (No. 6 seed), which defeated No. 7 Gannon (No. 3 seed) 2-0 in the opening round Friday.

A complete game preview, including live coverage options, for Sunday's second round game will be posted to www.RockAthletics.com Saturday.
