SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University closes out its 2012 football schedule Saturday with a 1 p.m. “Senior Day” home game against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference “crossover” rival Bloomsburg University.
The game will feature a battle of teams that finished near the top of their respective division standings.
The Rock finished the PSAC-Western Division schedule tied with California (Pa.) for third place behind division co-champions Indiana (Pa.) and Mercyhurst.
Bloomsburg was the second-place finisher in the PSAC-Eastern Division race, one game off the pace set by nationally-ranked Shippensburg. The Huskies are also ranked fourth in the latest NCAA Division II Super Region One poll and appear to be in position to earn a berth in the NCAA playoffs.
The series: The Rock and Huskies have not met since 2005, when the Huskies recorded a 40-24 victory on their home turf. Bloomsburg has won each of the last eight meetings with The Rock. The last SRU win over BU came in 1983.
The coaches: This week's Rock-Bloomsburg battle features two of the most successful NCAA Division II coaches in the nation.
The Rock's
George Mihalik owns a 167-102-4 (.618) career win-loss record The Rock's head coach. He is SRU's all-time leader in career wins and ranks third among active PSAC coaches, fifth on the conference's all-time wins chart and sixth among active NCAA D-II head coaches. Mihalik is winless in six games against Bloomsburg.
Bloomsburg's Danny Hale ranks second on the PSAC's all-time wins list and fourth among active Division II head coaches with a 212-68-1 career record. Hale's record includes five seasons (1984-88) as head coach at West Chester and the last 20 seasons as the Huskies' head coach. Hale, who is 6-0 all-time against SRU, trails only Rock graduate Denny Douds (237 wins in 39 seasons) on the PSAC's all-time wins chart.
Another winning season: With their win last Saturday over Lock Haven, The Rock assured themselves of a winning record for the fourth consecutive season, the sixth season in the last seven and the 18th time in Mihalik's 25 seasons as the Green and White's head coach.
The Rock and Bloomsburg are two of only five PSAC programs that have had a winning record in each of the last four seasons. The other three are California, Edinboro and LIU Post (formerly C.W. Post).
Rock stats and stars: The Rock rank seventh in the 16-team PSAC in scoring offense at 33.8 points per game and are eighth in scoring defense at 28.8 ppg. The offensive attack is led by junior quarterback
Nigel Barksdale, who has passed for 1,451 yards and 14 touchdowns and rushed for 507 yards (#2 on the team) and seven TDs this fall. Satterfield leads The Rock in rushing with 642 yards and four TDs. Junior slotback
LaQuinn Stephens-Howling is SRU's top receiver with 34 catches for 433 yards and five TDs, while redshirt sophomore wide receiver
Ken Amos has 28 receptions for a team-high 508 yards and two TDs. Junior linebackers
Gary Allen and
Quindell Dean are The Rock's leading tacklers with 81 and 72, respectively. Thompson has a team-high 10.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 quarterback sacks. Redshirt sophomore safety
Isaiah Coleman and junior cornerback
Anthony Saunders share the team lead in interceptions with three each. Brackman is 42-of-45 on extra-point kicks and 4-of-6 on field goals with a long of 28 yards. Junior
James McCombie ranks fourth in the PSAC with a 40.6 yards per punt average.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Tim Kelly has passed for 1,585 yards and 20 TDs. Senior wide receiver Kyle Fisher has caught 23 passes for 439 yards and five TD. Senior linebacker Jarrett Pidgeon has recorded a team-best 85 tackles. Senior defensive back Terrell Oglesby has intercepted three passes.
