ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship game Sunday afternoon at Mercyhurst University.
The win for Mercyhurst gave the Lakers their first PSAC title and improved the region's No. 3 team to 14-5-7 overall on the year. Slippery Rock drops to 11-4-6 overall and will await the NCAA selection committee's announcement tomorrow night to determine if the season will continue.
The Atlantic Region gets four teams into the NCAA Tournament and Slippery Rock was not ranked among the top six last week, but has defeated No. 1 Gannon twice in the last 10 days and has a strong case for an NCAA bid with only four losses all season. The selections will be announced at 7 p.m. in a webcast at www.ncaa.com.
Slippery Rock finished Saturday's title game with an 13-11 advantage in total shots, while Mercyhurst posted a 7-3 edge in shots on goal and both teams were awarded one corner kick.
Clayton Master was outstanding in goal for Slippery Rock, recording five saves, including an unbelievable stop on a penalty kick attempt to keep the game scoreless with just over 20 minutes to play.
Joshua Gray also made a team save in the second half that kept the game scoreless.
Diego Gustin earned the win for Mercyhurst after recording three saves.

Brandon Chiu were all credited with shots on target for SRU.
Slippery Rock opened the game with the momentum, outshooting the Lakers 9-3 in the opening 45 minutes, but The Rock could not find the net with Gustin making two saves to send the game to intermission scoreless.
The Lakers got their first solid scoring chance of the game in the 67th minute when Slippery Rock was called for a foul in the box and Sten Marcson was awarded a penalty kick. Master came off his line to make a great save to keep it scoreless.
Lund's game-winner came in the 84th minute off an assist from Dane Rimko.
Slippery Rock could not gain any momentum down the stretch, despite the Lakers' Nate Stern receiving a red card in the 87th minute.
