SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Former Lock Haven University standout Lindsay Rentel was named assistant coach of the Slippery Rock University women’s lacrosse team Tuesday in an announcement from Paul Lueken, director of athletics.
Rentel spent last season serving as an assistant at NCAA Division III Lycoming College in Williamport, Pa., and spent the previous three years working in the athletic office at East Tennessee State University.
“We’re excited to bring Lindsay in and make her a part of our growing lacrosse program here at Slippery Rock,” said Lueken. “Her experience as a standout player in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference will be a valuable asset to our program moving forward.”
“I had a great experience playing in the PSAC,” said Rentel. “I’m grateful to have the opportunity to return to the conference as a coach and I’m excited to be a part of the program at Slippery Rock. The team is improving every year and I’m looking forward to being involved with the next step.”
Last season at Lycoming, Rentel worked as a part-time assistant coach for the Lady Warriors, handling the offensive coordinator duties and assisting with all other facets of the program. She helped lead to team to the Middle Atlantic Conference semifinals and helped guide six players to All-Conference honors, as well as two players to All-Region honors.
“Lindsay was a great person to work with,” says Lycoming head coach Erica Browne. “She played at a very high level in college and was able to bring that experience to the table with us. Our offensive output increased significantly under her guidance last season.”
Prior to making her collegiate coaching debut at Lycoming, Rentel spent three years working as an intern/graduate assistant for the Buccaneer Athletic Scholarship Association at East Tennessee State, where she received her master’s degree in sports management in 2010.
While at ETSU, Rentel was involved in game management, community relations, promotions, special events and fundraising. She served as the president of the student-athlete support group “Buc Wild,” an organization that became the largest student organization on campus under her leadership. She also served as the director of the inaugural ETSU/Citizens Bank Soccer Tournament.
Rentel played lacrosse at Lock Haven from 2004-2007 while pursuing an undergraduate degree in sports administration. She played in the PSAC semifinals in every year of her career, advancing to the title game twice. The team also reached the NCAA national semifinals in 2005 and again in 2007.
Rentel served as team captain in both her junior and senior years, having her most productive year in 2006. She was named to Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association/US Lacrosse and WomensLacrosse.com second team All-America honors. She was also selected to the IWLCA All-Region first team, accompanying her second team honor from the previous season. Rentel was named to first team All-PSAC honors that season and saw herself in the national spotlight when she was named National Player of the Week.
At Slippery Rock, Rentel will serve as the top assistant to fourth-year head coach Emily Hopkins. The Rock is coming off a 7-10 overall record last season, its best record since returning to Division II competition in 2007.
"I'm really looking forward to having Lindsay join our program," said Hopkins. "Right now it is likely that we will have her working with the offense. She brings a great deal knowledge and experience and knows what its like to play in this league."
Rentel is a native of Medford Lakes, N.J., but her family now resides in Johnson City, Tenn. Rentel’s younger brother, Will, serves as a student volunteer coach of a local high school in Tennessee, where he attends college at Tennessee Tech.
