CALIFORNIA, Pa.--Chere’ Marshall scores 10 points as the Slippery Rock University women’s basketball team dropped a 97-47 contest at No. 22 California on Wednesday night. The Rock (4-16 overall) finished the first half of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division play with a 1-6 record. 

Marshall was one of four Rock players with three rebounds. Julie Molloy and Alex Beatty both scored seven points and Nikki Presto dished out three assists. Amanda Mikatavage led the team with two blocks. 

The Vulcans (16-4 overall, 6-1 PSAC-West) were led by Brooque Williams and Kayla Smith, both recording a double-double. Williams recorded 23 points and 11 rebounds and Smith had 22 points and 13 rebounds. Williams also had six assists and eight steals.
 
SRU took an early 5-3 lead in the first half when the home team took a 9-7 lead after William hit a jumper in the lane. The Vulcans did not trail the rest of the game. 

Grace Palucis received a pass in the paint from Presto to pull the game within five, 16-11, with 12:32 left in the first half. California went on a 35-11 run to end the first half with a 51-22 lead. 

The Rock recorded 17 turnovers in the first half. 

Marshall started the second half hitting a three pointer, but the Vulcans would go on a 17-4 run through the first eight minutes of the first half, to ultimately take the 97-47 win. 

The Rock shot 32% (16-50) from the floor and 71.4% (10-14) from the free throw line. SRU recorded four blocks and six steals. 

The Vulcans shot 51.3% (40-78) from the floor and 31.3% (5-16) from behind the arch. As a team Cal U recorded 18 steals and out rebounded SRU 50-24. 

The Rock starts the second half of PSAC-West play on Saturday when they travel to Mercyhurst. Tipoff is set for 1 pm.
