Rock ends skid with 60-50 win over Lock Haven

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. --
Junior guard Grace Palucis scored a team-high 14 points and senior guard Julie Molloy added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds Wednesday night to lead the Slippery Rock University women's basketball team to a 60-50 win over visiting Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division action in Morrow Field House.

The win was The Rock's first in five division games this winter and snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Green and White,.who improved their season record to 4-14.

Wednesday's loss was the sixth straight sustained by Lock Haven and dropped the Bald Eagles' record to 5-11 overall, 0-5 in division play.

The Rock returns to action at 6 p.m. Saturday, when it will host Indiana in a division game. The Green and White then go on the road for three straight games.

SRU finished Wednesday's game with a 41% (20-49) efficiency on its field goal attempts, hit 55% (6-11) of its shot from 3-point range and sank 58% (14-24) of its free throws.

Lock Haven, which outrebounded SRU bya 45-32 margin, shot 32% (19-59) from the field, made only one of 12 (8%) of its long-range shots and 55% (11-20) of its charity tosses.

Neither team took particularly good care of the basketball as Lock Haven committed 25 turnovers and The Rock 20.

The Rock enjoyed a 20-7 advantage in scoring "off the bench" while Lock Haven had a 30-18 scoring advantage "in the paint" and an 18-7 margin in "second-chance points."

SRU for most of the opening six minutes of the game before a layup by freshman center Tynesha Lee gave them a 10-8 lead. The hosts never trailed thereafter.

The Rock led by 12 points, 32-20, with two minutes left in the first half and took an eight-point lead (32-24) into the intermission.

Lock Haven trimmed the margin to four points, 34-30, with 17 minutes left to play, only to see The Rock respond with an 18-5 run in the next 11 minutes to take a 17-point, 52-35, lead with six minutes remaining.

The final 10-point margin was smallest held by the hosts in the final six minutes.
