The Rock scored 13 unanswered goals to run away from Wilmington in the final home game of the season

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women’s lacrosse team used a 13-0 run to defeat Wilmington University (Del.), 17-6, in a non-conference match at Thompson Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Sam Huebner scored first for The Rock, just 14 seconds into the game, but Wilmington responded with three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead with 24:22 left in the first half.
Slippery Rock answered with an 8-0 run to close the half with a 9-3 lead and opened the second half with five unanswered goals to cap a 13-0 run and put the game out of reach.
Amy Halls, who broke the single-season scoring record at SRU in her last game, led the team with a career-high nine points on six goals and three assists. She also picked up three ground balls and won three draw controls.
Casey Quinn and
Alexis Slutsky each finished with three goals and one assist, with Quinn adding five draw controls, two ground balls and one caused turnover. Slutsky finished with two ground balls and one caused turnover as well.
Katie Roof played an outstanding all-around game, scoring two goals and adding two assists for four points and also picking up four ground balls, four draw controls and causing three turnovers.
Samantha Eddy scored two goals and picked up one ground ball and Huebner added the final tally for The Rock while also picking up three ground balls.
Emma VanDenburg finished with a game-high seven ground balls while also causing two turnovers and assisting on one goal.
Chelsey Rovesti led the defensive effort with five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Ashley WInkelspecht picked up her fifth win of the season in goal, allowing six goals and recording 11 saves in a complete game effort.
Wilmington was led by five goals from Kelly Wojciechowski. Amber Smith was credited with the loss after allowing 17 goals and recording 13 saves in the game.
Slippery Rock finished with advantages of 37-25 in total shots, 34-24 in ground balls and 15-10 in draw controls.
With the win, The Rock improves to 5-11 overall this season and becomes the first women’s lacrosse team at SRU to win five games in a single season since the 1989 squad finished 8-2. Wilmington falls to 7-9 overall.
The Rock will close the 2009 season at Indiana (Pa.) Wednesday night with a PSAC-West matchup. IUP won the first meeting between the two teams, 16-12, at Thompson Stadium April 1. First draw is set for 7 p.m.
