SRU trails Bloomsburg, Edinboro, Charleston and Bentley (Mass.) in the Super Region One ranking released Monday by the NCAA
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Slippery Rock University dropped one spot to fifth in the latest NCAA Division II Super Regional One football ranking released Monday the NCAA office.
The Rock was ranked fourth in the initial poll released last Monday, but then lost a 27-10 decision to Clarion last Thursday and dropped below Bentley (Mass.), which was ranked sixth a week ago.
East Stroudsburg (5-2), the No. 5 team in last week's ranking and under the direction of SRU alumnus Denny Douds, dropped completely out of the regional top 10 in the wake of 27-13 loss last Saturday to unbeaten (7-0) Bloomsburg, the top-ranked team in the region.
Edinboro (6-1), the No. 3 team last week, traded places with unbeaten (7-0) Charleston (W. Va.) this week after the Fighting Scots beat Indiana, 28-14, last Saturday.
California (5-2), ranked seventh last week, moved up one spot to No. 6 this week after a 48-14 win last Saturday over winless Lock Haven.
SRU travels to Gannon (2-5) for a 1 p.m. game Saturday, then hosts California in a 1 p.m. game Oct. 24 on Bob DiSpirito Field at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium, the final home of the season for the Green and White.
Shaw (N.C.) and Merrimack (Mass.), the No. 9 and 10 teams in last week's regional ranking, dropped out this week, while Bowie State (Md.), Shepherd (W. Va.) and Shippensburg made their first appearances in the regional ranking.
The Rock beat Bowie State, 17-14, in an opening-week game Aug. 29 and lost a 27-24 decision Sept. 19 at Edinboro.
The top six teams in the final regional ranking Nov. 8 will earn berths in the NCAA Division II playoffs.
The Rock seeks its first trip to NCAA postseason competition since 1999, when it made a third consecutive trip to the playoffs.
