LOCK HAVEN. Pa. -- Rock All-America pole vaulter Jennifer Hansen was named Thursday as a recipient of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "Spring Top Ten Award."
The Top Ten Award is the third received by Hansen in the past year. She also earned Top Ten status in the spring of 2007 and winter of 2008.
The Top Ten Awards, selected by the PSAC's sports information directors, recognize student-athletes who distinguish themselves in the classroom as well as the arena of competition. The award is presented to the top five female and top five male student-athletes in a given season (fall, winter and spring).
To tbe a candidate for the Top Ten Awards, a student-athlete must have achieved a minimum of a 3.25 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key reserve with legitimate athletic credentials.
Hansen, a junior from Charleston, W. Va., currently owns a perfect 4.0 grade point average as an elementary education major at SRU.
She was named last week to first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors and, as such, is among the candidates for Academic All-America honors.
As a two-time winner of the Top Ten Award in the 2007-08 academic year, Hansen is also a Rock-solid candidate for PSAC "Scholar-Athlete of the Year" honors presented to the top female and male student-athletes in the conference.
In addtion to her Top Ten and 2008 Academic All-District first-team honors, Hansen has earned second-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection in 2007. and three U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association all-academic awards.
In athletic competition, she is a four-time USTFCCA All-America selection. She earned national runner-up honors in the 2007 NCAA Division II outdoor championships, placed third in both the 2008 indoor and outdoor national meets and finished 11th in the 2006 outdoor competition.
Hansen was named in March as the 2008 USTFCCCA indoor East Region Field Athlete of Year as well as the PSAC indoor Field MVP. The owner of the PSAC all-time and Championship records in both indoor and outdoor competition, she is the two-time defending conference champion in both indoor and outdoor competitions and was named as the 2007 and 2008 PSAC Championships indoor Field MVP.
She is the fourth Rock student-athlete to attain PSAC Top Ten status during the 2007-08 academic year. She joins football student-athletes Mike Butterworth and Clint Forsh and volleyball student-athlete Jen Blasko in that elite group.
Hansen was the fifth Rock student-athlete to receive ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors during the 2007-08 academic year and the fourth to receive first-team honors. She joins a group that includes Blasko, Butterworth, Forsha and men's soccer student-athlete Nick Christy (second team).
