Sally Ward (1971) on both the basketball and softball team while at The Rock.
 
Ward became avidly involved with track and field following her collegiate career, competing internationally for eight years, and was an Olympic Trials finalist in the long jump.
 
Ward also took up a career in coaching after college, becoming the girls’ head basketball coach at Hickory High School. In 22 years as coach, she tallied a 324-167 overall record. Ward’s teams won five Mercer County championships and finished as runner-up four times. She also led Hickory to a District 10 championship and seven runner-up finishes. Ward also coached track and field at Hickory for 10 years. She was a recipient of the National High School Coaching Award presented by Scholastic Coach Magazine in 1987.
