Ruth Podbielski (1949) began a storied career after graduating from Slippery Rock University. She coached and directed intramurals at Butler High School and also spent 32 years with Indiana (Pa) University in a variety of roles.

At IUP, Podbielski served as a faculty member in the physical education department, was coach of the women’s basketball and volleyball teams, was the director of women’s intramurals, was assistant chair and acting chair of the health and physical education department, and also served as the director of athletics for the women’s intercollegiate program. In 2013, Podbielski received the IUP President’s Medal of Distinction for professional achievement.
