John Watson (1940) was a two-sport athlete during his playing days at SRU, competing on both the rifle and tennis teams. He was the highest shooter for average in each of his four seasons on the rifle team, firing a record 283 as captain of the team during his senior season.
 
After graduating from The Rock, Watson eventually started up his own business, Watson’s Tennis Shop. He also strung tennis rackets for nearly 75 years, including rackets for Butler and Grove City High School as well as Grove City, Westminster, Thiel, and Slippery Rock University.
 
Watson served on the Slippery Rock University Alumni Association Board of Directors for more than 20 years, and served as president of the association for a period of time. He was also an active member of the Slippery Rock University Athletic Association since its inception, and was one of the founding members of the Watson Family Scholarship at SRU.
