Charles Sanders (1986) was one of the best running backs to come out of SRU. In three years as a starter, Sanders compiled 658 rushes, 2,706 rushing yards (4.1 yards per carry), and 17 touchdowns. He also recorded 419 receiving yards and one touchdown reception. Sanders was the leading rusher among NCAA Division II players in 1984 when he totaled 1,315 yards on the ground. He was a two-time football All-America pick and also a Heisman Trophy candidate. Sanders also played in the East-West Shrine All-Star game (containing mostly Division I players) after his senior season, becoming the first SRU player to compete in the game.

Sanders was then drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the 1986 draft before spending time with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

After his NFL career, Sanders went into the entrepreneurial industry, eventually becoming the CEO of Urban Lending Solutions (ULS).
