Bill Purvis (1965) was an outstanding sprinter on The Rock track and field teams. He was a four-year letterman and a four-time Pennsylvania Conference sprint champion. Purvis also competed in a qualifying meet for the 1964 U.S. Olympic team. When he graduated, Purvis was the school record-holder in the 60, 220, and 300-yard dashes.
After SRU, Purvis found success in both track and powerlifting at the master’s level. He won a USTFF national championship in the outdoor 100 and indoor 50 (30-34 age group), as well as several Masters titles. He also won numerous Masters meets in lifting and was two-time champion in the Eastern U.S. meet in the 181 class.
Purvis was also a football, basketball, and track coach at various levels in the Chartiers-Houston and Knoch school districts.
