The Athletes for Forgotten Angels group began in 2008 at Slippery Rock. The group chooses one destination each year to travel to with the goal of completing community service in that area. In the group's first year, it traveled to Haiti to bring school supplies to underprivileged children, while also teaching various sports clinics.
In the second year, the group traveled to New Orleans to assist in the rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Katrina. Again, the group of Rock student-athletes and coaches ran various sports clinics for local children.
In 2010, Forgotten Angels traveled to St. Lucia to teach sports clinics and deliver the NCAA's Student Athlete-Affairs presentation to local education officials. The program is aimed at providing students with support in the areas of academics, athletics, personal and career development and service.
In 2011, the group stayed home and focused its efforts on the local community, hosting a "Dinner for Dreams" and planting a memorial garden on campus.
In January of 2012, the group returned to Haiti to help with the recovery from a devastating earthquake.
in January of 2014, the group made its first trip to Africa and stayed at the Hekima Place orphanage for girls in Nairobi, Kenya.
