SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. --
Corning (N.Y.) Community College standouts Gina Brenzo and Liz Gorges have signed softball letters of intent to play at Slippery Rock University, Rock head coach Vashion Johnson announced Thursday.

They joined The Rock program after leading Corning to a 67-15 cumulative record the past two seasons and only the second and third 30-win seasons in school history.

The duo also left their individual marks on the Red Barons program.

Gorges, an Addison High School graduate, set Corning career records in home runs (23), RBIs (121), hits (125), doubles (26), total bases (230) and slugging percentage (.948). As a sophomore in 2010, she batted .536 with 12 doubles, 11 home runs and 55 RBIs.

For her efforts, she received first-team All-America honors from both the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and was named as the Midstate Athletic Conference "Player of the Year."

The NJCAA first-team All-America citation was the second received by Gorges in as many seasons and earned her the distinction of being only the third Corning CC student-athlete to earn All-America honors in back-to-back seasons.

Brenzo, a graduate of Horseheads High School, earned first-team NFCA and second-team NJCAA All-America honors last spring after she batted .465 with a .537 on base percentage. She was success on 37 of 38 stolen base attempts and set new Corning career records for at bats (264), singles (95), runs scored (107) and stolen bases (69).

"We had a team effort the past two seasons, but [Gina and Liz] really stepped up the program," Corning head coach Stacy Johnson said in a Corning Leader newspaper story announcing the duo's signing letters of intent to join The Rock. "Between either Gina touching the plate or Liz knocking a run in, they accounted for 80 percent of our runs the last two years.

"I'm very proud of everything they've accomplished," Stacy Johnson added. "They're super kids. They not only had team goals, but individual goals. To get out of here in two years with above a 3.0 GPA for both of them – now they're off to bigger and better things.

"(Vashion Johnson) took a trip up here last spring to watch these two play and he was ready to sign them on the spot," Stacy Johnson added. "Brenzo's speed and ability to get on base impressed him and Liz probably hit a 260-foot bomb while he was here. He thinks their offensive style of play will really fit into the program and he's projecting they will both start next year."

Brenzo and Gorges join a Rock program that has enjoyed unprecedented success in recent years. The Green and White have recorded 20 or more wins in each of the last six seasons. The Rock also earned a first-ever NCAA Division II playoff berth in 2008 and the following season made its first appearance in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs since 1984.

The Rock returns five starters from its 2010 team, including first-team All-PSAC-West third baseman Jenna Geibel and second-team All-PSAC-West outfielder Shardea Croes
