Jen Harpp earned All-America honors with an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Division II National Championships Saturday at the University of Southern Indiana, marking the highest finish for a Slippery Rock female runner in the program's history.
Harpp covered the 6,000-meter course in a time of 21:09, her second-best performance at that distance, and earned her second All-America honor, accompanying the accolade she earned during the indoor track and field season last year.
Harpp, who finished fourth at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships, was the second PSAC runner to cross the line at the National Championships. Priscilla Jennings of Millersville finished eighth. PSAC Champion Neely Spence faded late in the race, finishing 43rd.
“She ran a great race from start to finish,” said head coach John Papa. “I’m really proud of the way she closed out these last few races of the season.”
Harpp closes her cross country career at Slippery Rock with one of the best seasons in school history, earning All-PSAC, All-Region and All-America honors. She is the second runner in as many years to earn All-America accolades during the cross country season after Jaime Wright finished 20th last season. Harpp's 11th-place finish is the highest finish by any Slippery Rock female runner at the National Championships.
The top-40 finishers in the National Championships earn All-America honors.
Harpp will now turn her focus to the indoor track and field season, where she finished second in the 5,000-meter run at the 2009 Indoor National Championships.
