Kaylee Smith added nine kills, 14 digs and three service acesFriday afternoon but it wasn't enough as second-seeded Wheeling Jesuit handed the sixth-seeded Rock a 3-1 setback in semifinal action of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional tournament.
The loss gave The Rock a 26-12 final record this winter. Wheeling Jesuit will take a 30-9 mark into Saturday's regional final against either California or Lock Haven.
Senior opposite
Anastasia Urbanik chipped in eight kills and a team-high 17 digs for SRU, while sophomore middle blocker
Marissa Balmert added seven kills and junior middle blocker
Keira Peoples had six kills.
Junior defensive specialist
Stacey Domer recorded 15 digs; sophomore setters
Anna Bixler and
Kim Wilson had 21 and 16 assists, respectively, and sophomore defensive specialist/Libero
Brittany Spangler contributed 10 digs.
Wheeling Jesuit won the first two games by 25-17 and 25-19 scores before SRU won Game 3 by a 25-17 score. Wheeling Jesuit then closed out the match with 25-21 win in Game 4.
Friday's loss rang down the curtain on the collegiate careers of Blasko, Urbanik and defensive specialist
Courtney Fajerski. Those three student-athletes, the only seniors on this year's team, are the first Rock volleyball players to have played in NCAA postseason competition all four seasons of their collegiate eligibility.
