CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- Senior opposite
Anastasia Urbanik (pictured above) recorded 13 kills, 12 digs and three blocks Thursday afternoon to lead the sixth-seeded Rock to a 3-2 win over third-seeded Edinboro in opening-round action of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional tournament.
With the win, The Rock (26-11) moved into a 5 p.m. Friday semifinal match against second-seeded Wheeling Jesuit. A win Friday would put The Rock in the regional finals for the first time since 1993.
Wheeling Jesuit defeated West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival West Virginia State by a 3-2 score in the second opening-round match Thursday.
Top-seeded California and fourth-seeded Lock Haven recorded 3-0 wins over Elizabeth City State and Mercyhurst, respectively, in the final two first-round matches.
The Rock opened Thursday's match with a 25-22 win in Game 1 before Edinboro (26-9) bounced back to win the next two games by 25-18 and 25-23 scores.
SRU then evened the match at two games apiece with a 25-19 win in Game 4 and claimed victory with a 15-11 win in the fifth and final game.
Freshman outside hitter
Kaylee Smith had 10 kills, three blocks, two service aces and 13 digs, while senior outside hitter
Jen Blasko and junior middle blocker
Keira Peoples each added nine kills to the winning attack. Blasko also had a team-high 15 digs and two blocks; Peoples had a team-high four blocks.
Sophomore middle blocker
Marissa Balmert had eight kills and six blocks, junior defensive specialist
Stacey Domer had 14 digs and sophomore setters
Anna Bixler and
Kim Wilson handed out 23 and 17 assists, respectively. Bixler also had 10 digs.
Thursday's win avenged a pair of 3-1 losses suffered by The Rock in head-to-head regular-season meetings with Edinboro, a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division rival of SRU.
